Out of the Embers, by Amanda Cabot

Cabot’s Western series are always a simmering combination of historical, romance, and heavy dollops of suspense. She keeps you turning pages, waiting for the wicked presence in the background to strike.

In Out of the Embers, book one of the Mesquite Springs series, Evelyn battles an ominous shadowy watcher, as well as some very open catastrophes. A fire at the orphanage where whe works, leaves her on the run with a young girl — they are the only two survivors of the arson fire. Is it, or is it not known that there were survivors?

That is only one of the questions in this complex and satisfying plot. I will not tell too much of what happens, because you will want to read it yourself.100_9216
